Portland’s 25th Annual Dragon Boat Festival
Get ready for Portland’s 25th annual Dragon Boat Festival, a vibrant celebration featuring over 40 teams from Oregon, Washington, and California racing on the Willamette River. This family-friendly event in Downtown Portland offers exciting 500-meter races, delicious food vendors, a beer garden, and face painting for kids.
Organised by DragonSports USA, the festival is a lively way to conclude the summer season. The Portland Fire Department will start the races at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday with a dazzling fire boat water display. Whether you’re cheering on the racers or soaking in the festive atmosphere, this is an event you won’t want to miss.

Experience the Magic of Vaux’s Swifts at Chapman Elementary This September
As September unfolds, a breathtaking natural phenomenon takes place in Northwest Portland. Each evening, just before sunset, thousands of Vaux’s Swifts fill the skies above Chapman Elementary School, performing a stunning aerial display. These agile birds, on their migratory path, have made the Chapman chimney their roosting spot since the 1980s. This site has become one of the largest known roosting locations for migrating Vaux’s Swifts, captivating both birds and spectators alike.
The Swift Watch at Chapman has become a cherished community event. People gather with blankets and lawn chairs to watch these remarkable birds as they spiral into the chimney for the night. This experience offers more than just birdwatching—it’s a unique opportunity for the community to connect with nature and each other, fostering a sense of awe, excitement, and shared enjoyment.
